I'm the caregiver for my toddler sister, and I couldn't be bothered to force this kind of stuff on her. I'm probably the only one in her family that doesn't force her to say hi or say stuff she doesn't wanna say. If someone says hi and she doesn't answer or looks away, i dont try to force it or tell her to be a way that she's not in the mood for. Adults are grown enough to understand that even kids have days where they dont wanna socialize. I dont even put a label on it like "oh shes just shy" because i dont wanna limit her to just being someone who's shy. Also i remember how dreadful it was as a kid to literally be forced to say hi to every single person my parents knew or to random strangers, i was also one of those kids who were shy until they got to know you. So being forced to act so familiar to people who i didnt know was something that really bothered me (dont know if it plays a role, but i did end up growing up and still deal with anxiety). But same with stuff like please and thank you, instead of forcing it, i just model it for her. Because she observes my behavior saying please & thank you to others and to her, she will also say those things (when she feels like it, but shes still learning) she even says excuse me to strangers when theyre in the way. The best way to teach a kid to have a behavior you want them to have is to literally model it. They won't do what you tell them, they'll do what they see.
